Landscapes

"Landscapes" gathers the views I found on foot through Moscow and its outskirts in the mid-1980s, all made on the LOMO-compact-automat and black-and-white film. These are not grand vistas but the ordinary geography of Soviet life — empty lots, snow-quieted courtyards, the horizon interrupted by identical apartment blocks. The toy camera's soft lens and unpredictable exposures lend the scenes a grainy, dreamlike quality, turning plain surroundings into something remembered rather than merely seen. Together they form a quiet portrait of a place that no longer exists in quite the same way.
